School transport covered by insurance: how it works
A child with a leg in plaster, a parent hospitalised or incapacitated after an accident — and school carries on. Few families know this: under many contracts, the insurance organises and pays for school transport. Here is how, from a transport operator that carries out these missions every day in the eastern Lyon area.

Which types of cover fund "school escort"?
Depending on the contract, the service is called "school escort", "children's transport" or "mobility assistance". It can be found in three places:
- Personal accident cover (GAV) and school/after-school insurance: if the child is injured (fracture, sprain, immobilisation) and can no longer take the bus or walk to school.
- Assistance under the car or home contract : if the driving parent is injured or hospitalised after an accident and can no longer do the journeys.
- Certain health/protection contracts : if a parent is hospitalised or incapacitated (illness, surgery), the assistance provider organises daily life — including school.
The trigger is almost always a medical certificate confirming the incapacity (of the child or parent) and its duration. The service is generally limited in duration (often 2 weeks to 2 months, renewable) and covers the daily home ↔ school round trip.
In practice, how is it set up?
You call your contract's assistance number with the medical certificate. The case manager opens a file, validates the cover and then appoints a local transport operator — this is where ONLY VTC comes in, across the Lyon metropolitan area and a wide zone from Villefranche-sur-Saône to Vienne and Bourgoin-Jallieu. We receive a recurring mission: the same times every school day, often for several weeks.
You pay nothing upfront for the covered service: invoicing takes place directly between the transport operator and the assistance provider, using the case number.
What really matters when transporting a child
- The same driver every day. For a child (and their parents), regularity changes everything: a familiar face, a reassuring routine. Our school missions are assigned to a designated driver, not a different driver each morning.
- The right seat. Booster or car seat depending on age, installed before the first ride — mandatory under 10, and non-negotiable with us.
- Punctuality before the bell. A school does not wait: we set pick-ups around the actual gate opening times, with a margin, and the parent receives real-time journey tracking on their phone.
- Coordination with the family and the school. Person authorised to collect the child, precise drop-off point, special instructions (crutches, carrying the schoolbag): everything is recorded in the file from day one.
Our advice for parents
- Check your contracts now, not on the day of the accident: look for "school escort" or "children's transport" in your GAV, your school insurance and the assistance section of your car contract.
- Explicitly request the service from the assistance provider — it is not always offered spontaneously.
- Plan ahead for renewal : if the incapacity continues, a new medical certificate extends the mission without interruption.
