Going to Geneva without a Swiss vignette: it is possible, here is how

Leaving Lyon for Geneva without a Swiss motorway vignette? Good news: Geneva is a border city and you can enter it without ever driving on a Swiss motorway. You just need to know where to cross — and to know the trap your GPS sets for you.

Short answer: yes, you can go to Geneva without a vignette. The Swiss vignette is mandatory only on Swiss motorways and expressways — not on cantonal roads or in town. Geneva literally touches the French border: several customs posts lead straight onto the urban network, without a metre of Swiss motorway. Here is how it works in practice from Lyon, and what it really costs in time.

The Swiss vignette in two minutes

  • 40 CHF (about €42), valid for the calendar year — there is no daily or weekly version.
  • Mandatory only on Swiss motorways and expressways (green signs): cantonal roads and urban streets are exempt.
  • Available in electronic form (e-vignette, linked to the registration plate) or as a sticker, at customs, at a service station or online.
  • Driving on a Swiss motorway without a vignette: 200 CHF fine, plus the purchase of the vignette. Checks around Geneva are frequent.

On the French side, nothing changes: the A42 and then the A40 between Lyon and the border are standard toll motorways, and the Swiss vignette plays no part. The question only arises when crossing customs.

Entering Geneva via local customs posts, without a Swiss motorway

The GPS default — staying on the motorway to the end — takes you through the customs post at Bardonnex and straight onto the Swiss A1: the vignette is mandatory from the very first metres. This is the classic trap on this journey, and it is precisely where checks are most common.

The alternative: leave the motorway on the French side and cross the border at a post that leads onto the local network. From Lyon, the most practical entries are Saint-Julien-en-Genevois / Perly (exit before Bardonnex, entry via the Route de Saint-Julien) and Ferney-Voltaire (via the Pays de Gex, entry on the Grand-Saconnex side, ideal for the airport and the Nations district). You then drive on cantonal roads and in town — no vignette required, as long as you do not go back onto the A1.

Be careful on the way back and for journeys within the canton: a GPS quickly recalculates a "faster" route using the bypass motorway. If you are driving without a vignette, lock in the option "avoid motorways" once you have crossed the border.

The special case of the airport: the French sector of GVA

Geneva airport has a feature unique in Europe: its French sector, directly accessible from French territory via a dedicated road on the Ferney-Voltaire side — without going through Swiss customs, and therefore with no vignette at all. If your flight leaves from this sector, the question is settled automatically. For the main terminal (international sector), entry via Ferney and then the local network remains possible without a vignette.

What it costs in time — and attention

Avoiding the Swiss motorway costs minutes: allow 10 to 20 extra minutes depending on the time, more at cross-border peak times (7–9 a.m. and 5–7 p.m.), when thousands of cross-border commuters fill the small customs posts. Add constant GPS vigilance and — if you are going to the city centre — scarce and expensive parking in Geneva. For an occasional round trip, saving 40 CHF takes some effort.

The no-calculation option: a driver whose job this is

The other way to go to Geneva without buying a vignette: do not take your car. By private-hire car, the vehicle is already compliant — on our Lyon ↔ Geneva link, the price fixed at booking includes French tolls, the Swiss vignette and the vehicle's return. Drop-off at the airport (French or international sector depending on your flight), Cornavin or any address in the canton, with no detour or surprise check.

The amount can be calculated in 30 seconds on our estimate page, and it does not change: A40 traffic jams, customs queues or a ski Saturday, the confirmed price is the price you pay.

ONLY VTC provides the Lyon ↔ Geneva link in both directions, 24/7 — GVA airport, Cornavin, Palexpo, international organisations. Fixed price including tolls and vignette. Book online or on 06 67 25 84 26.
