Ski departures: avoiding A43 traffic jams from Lyon

Every winter, the same scenario: tens of kilometres of traffic jams between Lyon and the Maurienne on holiday Saturdays. Here are the time slots to avoid, the realistic alternatives — and why a fixed-price journey changes how you approach the road to the resorts.

Driver at the wheel on a motorway, heading for the Alpine resorts

The A43 is the only artery between Lyon and the Maurienne and Tarentaise valleys — and therefore to many Savoie resorts: Valloire, Valmeinier, Les Sybelles, La Plagne, Les Arcs, Val-d'Isère, Tignes, Courchevel, Méribel… On school holiday Saturdays, when rentals empty and fill on the same day, everyone crosses paths on the same motorway. The result: peaks of several hours of slow traffic between the eastern Lyon bypass, Chambéry and Albertville.

The time slots to avoid (and those that work)

  • Saturday 8 a.m. – 2 p.m., Lyon → resorts direction : the worst slot of the week, especially on Saturdays rated black by Bison Futé (February and Christmas holidays).
  • Saturday 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., resorts → Lyon direction : the return from rentals, made worse by equipment checks and snow in the valley.
  • The time slots that work : leave Lyon before 6 a.m., or move to Sunday — traffic generally flows well in both directions.
  • Friday evening is a reasonable alternative to the resorts, provided you avoid leaving Lyon between 4:30 and 7 p.m.

Add to this the hazards specific to the mountains: mandatory equipment (Mountain Law, winter tyres or chains from 1 November to 31 March), snowfall in the valley that triggers filtering toll barriers, and the final climb on hairpin bends, where one poorly equipped car blocks everyone.

What a private chauffeur changes in practice

First, the price does not change : an ONLY VTC journey to the Alps is fixed at booking — two hours of traffic jams do not add a single euro, whereas a taxi meter keeps running. Next, you leave at the calculated time : we know the critical time slots and suggest a departure that avoids them, often very early in the morning — you sleep in the car, not at the wheel. Finally, the vehicle is equipped for the mountains and the driver is used to winter conditions.

The most common case remains the airport → resort transfer : you land at Lyon-Saint-Exupéry, your driver tracks your flight and waits for you in the arrivals area, then heads to Savoie with no changes — luggage and skis in the van's boot. For a group of 4 to 7 people, the van often costs less than combined individual shuttles.

Preparing your journey to the resorts

  • Book early : February Saturdays go quickly, and booking in advance locks in the price and availability.
  • Mention skis and luggage : they determine the vehicle (sedan, estate or 7-seat van).
  • Allow a margin on the way down for a return flight: we calculate it for you based on the time slot and resort.
  • Check Bison Futé the day before: if Saturday is rated black, leaving a few hours later or earlier can save half a day.

You can estimate your journey in 30 seconds — the price shown is the price you will pay, traffic jams included. Long-distance links (resorts, Geneva, Grenoble) are quoted for special cases: several stops, bulky equipment, same-day round trips.

ONLY VTC has provided Lyon ↔ Alpine resort links since 2016, departing from the Lyon metropolitan area and Saint-Exupéry airport, 24/7. Fixed price quoted at booking, vehicles equipped for winter. Any questions? contact@onlyvtc.fr or 06 67 25 84 26.
